Lakota Rites of Passage:
For Young Women – Coming of Age Ceremony
This Ceremony is still practiced today in many Native communities
For Young Men – The Vision Quest
The practice of the Vision Quest has diminished in recent generations. Seeking our life purpose is an essential part of Spiritual Renewal.
Historically, the Sun Dance was connected with finding one's life purpose, or trying to make connection with Creator.
Creator has provided the Greatest Sun Dancer - the pinnacle and focus of Spiritual Renewal.
"Consequently, you are no longer foreigners and aliens, but fellow citizens with God's people and members of God's household, built on the foundation of the apostles and prophets, with Christ Jesus himself as the Chief Cornerstone."
- Ephesians 2:19-20, the Bible (Book of Elders)
Spiritual Renewal is more than simply reviewing the ideas found in the Sacred Hoop, although that is a good place to begin. Lakota Elder Larry Salway points to the hope found in the Greatest Sun Dancer - sent by Creator.
Larry Salway grew up on the Rosebud Reservation in southwestern South Dakota. He rose out of the poverty of his childhood and became a Licensed Clinical Social Worker and later, a professor at the Oglala Lakota College campuses in Kyle and Rapid City, SD. He served for five years as Tribal Judge in Pine Ridge, SD. Mr. Salway has also served as pastor of churches in Arizona and South Dakota. Larry is Co-President of Life Initiatives.
