This video uses ideas explained in Lakota Culture 104: “The 4 Levels of Native Acculturation”. Terms in this presentation will be confusing if you haven't first viewed Lakota Culture 104.

Some Native people prefer to stay isolated within their native culture, some have totally adopted the secular culture, but most are on a continuum between the two extremes. The video follows the following outline, looking at the preferences for each of the four acculturation levels explained in Lakota Culture 104.

1) The Traditional Person

GOVERNMENT: Tribal gov't
RELIGION: Tribal
MUSIC: Tribal
LANGUAGE: Native tongue
GREETINGS: handshake, eye contact
FRIENDSHIPS: native friendships
DRESS: traditional
SERVICES (medical, etc): Medicine Man
HOBBIES: pottery, beading
CLUBS: “horsehead clubs”
HOME FURNISHINGS: Indian artifacts
DIET: vegetables, game
FAMILY: extended family

2) The Culturally Immersed Person

GOVERNMENT: Self-governed
RELIGION: Tribal
MUSIC: Indian songs
LANGUAGE: Indian slang
GREETINGS: self-developed
FRIENDSHIPS: Indian people
DRESS: Native
SERVICES: (medical, etc) Medicine Man
HOBBIES: Native
CLUBS: Indian oriented
HOME FURNISHINGS: Indian oriented
DIET: varied
FAMILY: extended and nuclear

3) The Bicultural Person

GOVERNMENT: Tribal gov't
RELIGION: Native or Christian
MUSIC: Indian/contemporary
LANGUAGE: English and Native
GREETINGS: both traditional and mainstream culture
FRIENDSHIPS: Indian and non-Indian
DRESS: contemporary
SERVICES: (medical, etc) Medicine Man or Doctor
HOBBIES: Indian and non-Indian
CLUBS: Indian and non-Indian

4) The Fully Acculturated Person
